How to Plan a Michigan Golf Trip

What You Need to Know Before You Book

Michigan has more golf courses per capita than any other state — which is great news and a little overwhelming. Here's how to cut through the noise and put together a trip worth making.

Pick Your Region First

Northern Michigan — the Gaylord, Petoskey, and Traverse City corridor — is the premier destination and should be on every Michigan golfer's list at least once. Courses like Arcadia Bluffs, Boyne Highlands, and Black Forest are legitimate national-caliber layouts. But Northern Michigan in peak season (July and August) means resort prices, fully booked tee sheets, and crowds. If your budget has limits or you want a quieter experience, West Michigan and Mid-Michigan deliver solid golf at a fraction of the cost.

The Upper Peninsula is in its own category — fewer courses, shorter season, and a completely different atmosphere. UP golf is for golfers who want an adventure as much as a round. Greywalls at Marquette Golf Club alone is worth crossing the bridge for.

Book Tee Times Earlier Than You Think

The top Northern Michigan courses — Arcadia Bluffs, Bay Harbor, Boyne Mountain — book out 4 to 6 weeks in advance for summer weekends. If you wait until two weeks out in July, you'll find yourself scrambling. Book online as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Mid-week tee times are easier to get and almost always cheaper. Tuesday through Thursday is the sweet spot for both availability and value.

West Michigan, Mid-Michigan, and Southwest Michigan courses are more flexible — most can be booked a week out without issue. Still, summer weekends fill up, so don't assume you can just show up.

When to Go — Season Guide

May and early June: Shoulder season. Greens fees are lower, tee times are wide open, and the courses are freshly recovered from winter. Weather can be unpredictable, but the deals are real and the crowds are gone.

Late June through August: Peak season. Best weather, longest days, courses in prime condition — and the most expensive, most crowded window of the year. Book early if you're going in this window, especially for Northern Michigan.

September and early October: The best-kept secret in Michigan golf. Temperatures drop into a comfortable range, fall color in Northern Michigan is spectacular (especially mid-September through early October), crowds thin out, and many courses drop their rates. If you have scheduling flexibility, this is the best time to go.

How Many Rounds Per Day?

One round per day is the comfortable pace and gives you time to enjoy the surrounding area — which is half the point. Two rounds per day is possible, especially in Gaylord where multiple resort courses are close together, but it's a lot of golf. On a three-day trip, plan for three or four total rounds and build in at least one afternoon to explore the towns or a waterfront restaurant. The courses will be there next trip — and there will be a next trip.

Michigan Golf Trip Planning FAQ

What is the best Michigan golf trip for a first-timer?

For a first-time Michigan golf trip, the 3-day Northern Michigan itinerary is the classic choice — Arcadia Bluffs, a Petoskey or Boyne course, and a Gaylord resort round covers the best of what Michigan golf is known for.

How do I plan a Michigan golf trip?

Start by deciding your region, budget, and number of days. Northern Michigan is the premium destination. Book tee times 4–6 weeks in advance for top courses like Arcadia Bluffs. Choose lodging central to your planned courses and build in one non-golf afternoon for rest.

When is the best time for a Michigan golf trip?

Late July through September is the best overall window. July and August have the warmest weather. Late August and September offer cooler temperatures, less crowded courses, and early fall color in Northern Michigan. May and June offer lower rates.

How many rounds can you play in a Northern Michigan golf weekend?

Realistically, one round per day is the comfortable pace on a Northern Michigan trip. Two rounds per day is possible but taxing. A 3-day trip typically means 3–4 rounds. Gaylord's close-together resort courses make back-to-back rounds the easiest anywhere in Northern Michigan.
